Mahabodhi Temple

 

Mahabodhi Temple is in Bodhgaya. Emperor Asok (3rd century BC), the first Buddhist ruler of India, marked this important site with one of his trademark inscribed pillars, 52 m tall houses the colossal gilded image of Lord Buddha, with an elephant capital. A stone rail was put up around the perimeter in the 1st century AD, part of which still remains.

The history of the Mahabodhi Stupa (Bodhgaya Temple) goes back 2,500 years. Here is recorded the rise, fall and resurrection of Buddhism in India.
