Mahabodhi Temple is in Bodhgaya. Emperor Asok (3rd century BC), the first Buddhist ruler of India, marked this important site with one of his trademark inscribed pillars, 52 m tall houses the colossal gilded image of Lord Buddha, with an elephant capital. A stone rail was put up around the perimeter in the 1st century AD, part of which still remains.
