It is one of the most important tourist places in India. Rajgir is a pleasant valley, in the midst of hills and lush green forests.
Rajgir was the capital of the Magadh Mahajanpad (State). Ancient times Rajgir is known as Rajagriha, meaning the 'Home of Royalty'.
Lord Buddha lived here in the sixth century BC. The Jivekarmavan monastery was the favorite residence for Buddha. Vardhman Mahavir also spent 14 years of his life here.
February-April and August-November is the best period to visit Rajgir.
It is a pilgrim center for the Hindus, Muslims and Jains. It is also a popular winter health resort with number of hot water springs. These ponds are said to contain some medicinal properties which help in the cure of many skin diseases.
Now a days, attraction of Rajgir is the Ropeway which takes you uphill to the Shanti Stupa and Monasteries built by the Japanese Devotees on top of the Ratnagiri hills. |
